In the world of fitness, we’re often told there’s a single “best” way to train. Some swear by heavy lifts and explosive movements, while others champion slow, controlled repetitions. But what if the secret to building a stronger, leaner body isn’t about choosing one over the other?
In fact, it’s about understanding that different methods are simply different tools in your toolkit. The truth is, that both fast and slow movements are effective. They just achieve results in different ways.
The benefits of slow, controlled movement
When you slow down an exercise, you increase the Time Under Tension (TUT) on your muscles. This means your muscles are working for a longer period during each repetition. This approach is fantastic for:
Mind-muscle connection
It forces you to focus on the exact muscle you’re working, improving your ability to activate and feel that muscle contract.
Joint health
By eliminating momentum, you reduce stress on your joints, making it an excellent method for those with a niggle or anyone looking for a more joint-friendly workout.
Safety
Slower movements allow you to perfect your form, which is crucial for preventing injury, especially as you increase your strength.
The benefits of dynamic, faster movements
On the flip side, dynamic or faster movements also have a place in your routine. They are effective for:
Building power and speed
If your goal is to become more explosive for sports or daily activities, training with speed can improve your neuromuscular coordination.
Cardiovascular health
A faster tempo can elevate your heart rate, providing cardiovascular benefits in addition to strength.
Training for function
Many real-life movements, like picking up a child or carrying groceries, are done with speed and momentum. Training this way can improve your functional strength.
It’s not “either/or”, it’s “what works for you”
The key is to train smart, not just hard. There will be days when you feel full of energy and want to push the pace. On other days, you might feel a little tired or have a sore joint, and a slow, low-impact workout is exactly what you need.
In Stronger You for Life classes, our experienced instructors understand this. You don’t have to jump around to get strong and toned. We often use a variety of low-impact, slow, and controlled exercises that are just as effective as high-impact ones. The goal is to give you the options to choose what your body needs on any given day.
Ultimately, consistency is what matters most. Whether you’re moving fast or slow, as long as you’re moving with intention and listening to your body, you’re on the path to becoming a stronger you.
At Stronger You we have a large library of recorded classes, so that you can select short workouts of 15 or 30 minutes’ length. Whether you do a Functional Resistance, Mobility Hiit, or Pilates class the workouts are carefully planned to optimise your workout and deliver maximum impact.
“I love the variety of the challenges and can tell that my core and back strength have improved massively.”
