In a world obsessed with wearable tech that pings every time you blink, it’s easy to feel like you’re failing if you haven’t closed three digital rings by 9:00 AM.
However, often generic tracking is more gimmick than growth. Fitness is a personal journey, the most important “algorithm” is the one that keeps you showing up.
The power of three
I like to keep things simple. If you want to transform your health, your strength, and your longevity, there is one key metric – complete three resistance training classes a week.
That’s it. That’s the “magic number.” If you hit that mark, you are winning. You don’t need a heart rate monitor to tell you that you’re getting stronger; your body will tell you when those grocery bags feel lighter and your energy levels soar.
Making progress meaningful (and fun)
While showing up is 90% of the battle, we know that seeing your progress can be a huge motivator. But instead of counting every calorie or step, we suggest tracking things that actually correlate to your quality of life.
Here are a few ways to track your journey without the “gimmick” factor:
The “feel good” inventory
Once a month, rate your energy levels, sleep quality, and mood on a scale of 1–10. Real fitness is about how you feel on a Tuesday afternoon, not just how you look in a mirror.
The benchmark win
Pick one movement you enjoy (like a squat or a push-up). Every few weeks, notice how it feels. Does it feel “smoother”? Can you do one more rep with better form? That’s a massive win.
The consistency calendar
Use a physical wall calendar and put a big, satisfying “X” on the days you attend a class. Seeing a string of X’s is a visual representation of your discipline that no app can replicate.
The clothing test
Forget the scale – it’s a notorious liar that doesn’t account for muscle gain. How do your favourite jeans fit? How do you feel in that shirt that used to be a bit snug?
Your journey, your rules
The best tracking system is the one you actually enjoy using. If a watch makes you happy, wear it! But don’t let a “low score” ruin your day.
The secret weapon: The six-week reset
While the “weekly three” keeps the engine running, sometimes you need a navigator to make sure you’re heading in the right direction.
We also recommend booking a regular 1:1 check-in or, even better, a personal training session every six weeks.
Why the six-week mark? It’s the sweet spot where your body has adapted to your current routine and is ready for a new challenge. These sessions will allow you to:
- Review: your consistency and celebrate the wins
- Refine: your form or technique to ensure you’re moving safely and well
- Reset: plan your next block of training so you never hit a plateau
Having a pro in your corner turns “guessing” into “knowing.” It’s the ultimate way to validate your hard work and keep the momentum high.
And of course, life happens – holidays, moving house, illness, caring for others etc. – but if you have a strong baseline for fitness and strength you don’t need to worry as you will bounce back very quickly from an enforced break.
True strength is built through consistency. Focus on the three classes, enjoy the movement, and let the results take care of themselves.
