My passion is helping people reach goals they have struggled to achieve. While weight loss and body composition are the most active part of my practice, I also work with clients diagnosed with conditions such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, hypo-mobility, recovering from injury and osteoarthritis.

Lower back pain can often stop you doing basic things – picking up your kids, enjoying hobbies and even get a restful night’s sleep. At Stronger You for Life, we believe that you shouldn’t have to “just live with it.”

While many people reach for heating pads or painkillers, the most sustainable solution isn’t found in a medicine cabinet – it’s built through movement. Specifically, it’s built in your core.

The “internal back brace”: Understanding your core

When most people hear the word “core,” they think of six-pack abs. But for back health, the muscles you can’t see are actually the most important. Think of your core as a 360-degree cylinder that wraps around your midsection. It includes:

  • The transverse abdominis: Your deepest abdominal muscle that acts like a natural weight belt
  • The multifidus: Tiny muscles along the spine that provide stability
  • The obliques: Muscles on the side that handle rotation
  • The diaphragm and pelvic floor: The “lid” and “base” of your internal pressure system

Why strength is the secret

Your spine is a stack of bones (vertebrae) that relies on muscles for support. If your core is weak, your spine has to take the full brunt of your body weight and movements. This leads to compressed discs, strained ligaments and that familiar, dull ache.

A strong core acts as a stabilizer. It creates “intra-abdominal pressure,” which offloads the weight from your spine and distributes it safely across your muscles.

How Stronger You for Life can help

We specialize in three pillars of movement that are scientifically proven to transform back health:

  • Pilates: Focused entirely on that “inner cylinder,” Pilates teaches you how to engage your deep stabilizers to protect the spine.
  • Yoga: Combines core engagement with essential mobility, helping to release the tight hips and hamstrings that often pull the lower back out of alignment.
  • Strength training: This is the ultimate “back-proofing” tool. By lifting weights with proper mechanics, you build the muscular armour necessary to handle the demands of daily life.

The golden rule: Technique first

When dealing with back pain, how you move is far more important than how much you move. Jumping into an advanced workout with poor form is a recipe for further injury.

It is key to start small and get your technique absolutely right. Establishing a mind-muscle connection takes time. You need to learn how to “switch on” the right muscles before adding intensity. To help you build this foundation safely, we offer two primary ways to get started:

1. Online 1:1 sessions

Work directly with an instructor from the comfort of your home. They can watch your movement in real time, providing immediate cues and corrections to ensure your spine is always protected.

2. “How-to” films

Our library of instructional videos breaks down every movement step by step. These are perfect for mastering the basics at your own pace until you feel confident in your form.

Action steps for relief

  1. Master the “hinge,“ not the “hunch”: Practice bending at your hips rather than rounding your spine.
  2. Prioritise “anti-movement”: Focus on exercises like planks, bird-dogs, and dead bugs that teach your core to resist unwanted spinal movement.
  3. Keep moving: Gentle walking promotes blood flow to your spinal discs. Aim for several 10-minute walks a day.

Final thought

By strengthening your core and perfecting your technique, you aren’t just masking the pain; you are changing the structural integrity of your body. You are building a foundation that allows you to live life on your terms – pain-free and powerful.
