My passion is helping people reach goals they have struggled to achieve. While weight loss and body composition are the most active part of my practice, I also work with clients diagnosed with conditions such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, hypo-mobility, recovering from injury and osteoarthritis.
As we move into our 40s, 50s, and beyond, many of us notice a shift. Perhaps your favourite jeans feel a little snugger, or your energy levels aren’t quite what they used to be, even though your diet hasn’t changed. It is easy to shrug this off as an “inevitably slowing metabolism,” but the truth is far more empowering.
At Stronger You For Life, we believe that midlife isn’t the beginning of a decline – it’s a transition that requires a smarter, more targeted approach to how we move and fuel our bodies.
The truth about midlife metabolism
Metabolism is simply the process of your body turning food into energy to keep you alive and moving. While it feels like it’s “slowing down,” what is actually happening is a series of manageable physiological shifts.
The muscle connection:
Starting in our 30s, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass. Since muscle is metabolically active tissue, having less of it means we burn fewer calories at rest.
The hormonal shift:
During perimenopause and menopause, declining estrogen levels change how we store fat (often shifting it to the midsection) and how we respond to insulin.
The movement gap:
Aching joints or poor sleep can make us less likely to move throughout the day. These small reductions in “lifestyle movement” add up significantly.
How to take control
The good news? You aren’t a passenger in this process. By adjusting your habits, you can support a thriving metabolism and feel stronger than ever.
1. Prioritize protein and balanced fueling
Forget restrictive dieting; midlife bodies need nourishment. Aim for protein at every meal – think Greek yogurt, lean meats, lentils, or seeds – to support muscle repair. Fill your plate with colourful vegetables, healthy fats and fibre to keep your gut health and hormones in check.
2. Train smarter, not harder
In midlife, consistency beats intensity. High-intensity workouts every day can often skyrocket cortisol (the stress hormone), which encourages fat storage. Instead, focus on strength training. Just 30 minutes of compound movements (like squats and push-ups) can preserve muscle mass, boost your resting metabolic rate and protect your bones.
3. Move and recover
Daily movement – like a morning walk or post-dinner stroll – is the secret sauce for metabolic health. Equally important is recovery. Your body needs rest days and quality sleep to manage stress and keep your nervous system balanced.
